Kayaking the Upper Newport Bay
February 2 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
One of the best ways to appreciate Upper Newport Bay is to get out on the water, experience the tranquility and see pelicans, terns, and egrets flying by you. And if your eyes are quick, catch a glimpse of mullet jumping out of the water. Kayaking is fun and easy. The Newport Bay Conservancy offers a tour of the Upper Newport Bay every Saturday and Sunday morning year-round. Our trained Naturalists have been conducting water tours here at the Back Bay for twenty years. They begin with a quick lesson (sponsored by California Department of Boating & Waterways) on how to paddle and then lead participants into the Ecological Reserve. Naturalists make several stops where they discuss various aspects of the ecology and wildlife of the Bay. Each tour is unique with startling differences in birds and other wildlife seen depending on the season and state of the tide. In summer, the open-water skimmers and terns that come here to nest predominate. In winter, there is a huge abundance and diversity of shorebirds, ducks, and grebes that have migrated from Canada and Alaska. Bring sun protection, even in winter, and be prepared to get a little wet. Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to tour to check-in and fill out waiver (younger than 18 need parent permission and 1 parent per group, younger than 12 need to ride in a double kayak with an adult, under 8 not allowed to paddle out :-( Lightning or heavy winds/rain cancel tour.
